Try to choose something that the recipient can get a lot of use out of.  For example, if you know the person loves to take pictures with a digital camera, something simple like a set of rechargeable batteries is a great option.

If you're shopping for a Secret Santa exchange, make sure you get a gender neutral gift.  If you're completely lost as to what to select, go with a gift certificate, and let the recipient pick out his/her own present.
